Abrahamic House Conversation Club and Shabbat Dinner: Birth Rates

The fellows welcomed guests to join them at Abrahamic House DC on Friday, June 21st at 7:00 p.m. for the final Shabbat Conversation Club for the 2022-2024 Fellowship – where they gathered for a meal to discuss issues that matter.

This month, they discussed declining birth rates across the world. Last year, the fertility rate in the U.S. hit its lowest point on record, as families increasingly forgo or delay having children.

This decades-long drop in fertility is raising questions around the world over demographic changes, economic impacts and societal values. It also reflects issues related to cultural and religious shifts, economic pressures, changing family structures and career and contraceptive choices.

The guests had a respectful and thoughtful conversation. They discussed the costs of childcare and housing, the increasing secularization of modern life, and the difference between the US nuclear family model as opposed to the extended family models seen in other countries. As it was one of the last events hosted by our incredible 2022-2024 fellows, it was particularly emotional. Thanks to all who attended.
