April Showers Bring May Flowers: Hıdırellez Celebration

Hıdırellez is a special time to celebrate spring, renewal, and community. It’s a moment to honor Prophets Hızır and Ilyas, who bring blessings of health, abundance, and new beginnings. According to Islamic folk tradition, Prophets Hızır and Ilyas are known for appearing whenever someone is in need — offering guidance, aid, and hope.

While Hıdırellez originated as a spring festival, it has grown into something much deeper — a holiday that reminds us of the importance of showing up for those who are different from us, while acknowledging privilege, community, and our commitment to each other through mutual aid. Our fellows invite you to join in this reflection on what it means for us — people of different faiths and cultures — to honor and strive to grow into the spirit of Hıdırellez, today and beyond.

We’ll be making fresh spring bouquets, writing wishes on fabric to tie to a tree, and reflecting on what it means to show up for one another with compassion and care.

This celebration is brought to you as a community collaboration, with our community member Sundus leading the bouquet-making portion.

There will be drinks and appetizers provided, and we’d love for everyone to bring their favorite vegetarian or vegan spring appetizer to share.

This event will take place on Saturday, May 24th from 1-3 PM.
